Alasdair Fox


Alasdair is a partner and head of our Land Resources department.
For 35 years Alasdair has been involved in high profile and high value transactions covering the full range of rural property and including the sale and purchase of estates, farms, salmon fishings and forestry. He has also been involved in valuable mineral and open-cast mining options and agreements and specialises in land use and diversification.
His main focus nowadays is advising on agricultural law and land reform on which he has lectured and written widely. Alasdair also provides advice on such matters to other firms of solicitors as well as a number of local authorities.
Alasdair:
- was a consultant to the Scottish Executive on land reform and agricultural holdings,
- acted as a special adviser to the Scottish Law Commission on dispute resolution and irritancy in leases, and
- gave evidence on two occasions to the Scottish Parliament during its consideration of the Land Reform (Scotland) Bill, on behalf of the Law Society of Scotland.
Alasdair retains overall responsibility for a number of our high profile landed clients, acting for both landlords and tenants. He also has a widely acknowledged practice in private education.
He is co-author (with Lord Justice Clerk Gill) of ‘Agricultural Holdings Styles’ and annotated Part 2 of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 for Current Law Statutes.
He has appeared both on television and radio, is frequently quoted in the press and writes a regular column on rural matters for the Journal of the Law Society of Scotland.
Alasdair is a member of the Law Society of Scotland’s Rural Affairs Committee, of the Legal and Fiscal Policy Committee of the Scottish Rural Property Business Association and the Scottish Arbiters and Valuers’ Association.
From time to time he also advises the Scottish Estates Business Group and he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences.
